The Sabres installed a light blue ice surface for their AHL affiliate to host a game on versus the Cleveland Barons on March 20, 2005 and St. John's Maple Leafs on April 3, 2005. It was believed that the ice would show up better on television.

It replaced the Sabres' former home, Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, where the team played from 1970 to 1996. The venue is also home to the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League.
