NHL 27 Center Ice: The Good, The Bad, and The Puzzling

Today, EA Sports rolled out Patch #2 for NHL 27, bringing a wave of center ice updates (or let’s say... "changes"). I was originally planning to use this post to show off all the sleek new designs, but after loading into a few arenas, I'm calling out some glaring errors that came with the update instead. While some teams received spot-on fixes, others left me genuinely wondering what the graphics team was thinking.

A quick disclaimer before we jump in: I know people will ask, "Why aren't you mentioning issues with gameplay or online modes?" That’s not what we focus on here. You’ll find plenty of other sites across the web covering those aspects!

The Errors & Baffling Changes

  • St. Louis Blues: This is by far the biggest and most noticeable mistake. They updated the center line to be accurate, but for some reason, added a ridiculously thick blue circle around center ice instead of the standard thin blue line. I’ve never seen this thick circle on a real-life Blues rink.

    • Side note to the devs: Could you please lower the scoreboard to its proper height? Because it sits way too high up in the arena bowl, half of the cool new jumbotron animations get cut off out of frame. Also, our goal song cuts out well before the faceoff happens—likely a leftover holdover from the old organ "Let's Go Blues" chant days—and what happened to the post-goal chime counting off "1, 2, 3..." after play resumes?

  • Tampa Bay Lightning: They finally re-added the arena wordmark to the ice after it was missing at launch. However, in doing so, they broke the red line. It was changed to a basic candy stripe pattern that completely removes their iconic lightning bolts—a design feature they haven't changed in years.

  • Washington Capitals: The red line in-game now features stars, but Washington hasn't used that design since 2025. It should be their current checkered pattern.

  • Colorado Avalanche: Their ice was completely accurate prior to the patch. Somehow, the update added odd white vertical lines running up and down through the diamonds on the red line. Hopefully, EA can revert this back.

  • Toronto Maple Leafs: The new vintage logo at center ice looks fantastic, but the surrounding center circle was changed to a washed-out light blue that’s hard to see. It should have stayed standard blue.

  • Boston Bruins: The center line is still missing the team's bear logos. To be fair, this might be due to how recently Boston unveiled the real-life redesign.

The Missing Logos

  • Vegas Golden Knights: One glaring omission is Vegas. Unfortunately, their real-world ice features an anniversary logo this year, and EA historically avoids putting anniversary branding on the ice. This feels like a strict licensing rule holdover from the days before ice designs could be patched dynamically.

  • Calgary Flames: For that exact same reason, don't hold your breath waiting to see the Saddledome anniversary logo on the ice for Calgary this season either. The center line is missing the 2 inch red outline on each side as well.

On a Positive Note...

It wasn't all bad news! A few teams received incredible, highly accurate upgrades:

  • Carolina Hurricanes: Sporting their beautiful new Stanley Cup center ice art along with an accurate red line design.

  • Florida Panthers: Featuring their new "Hometown Remix" inspired center ice and sharp stars in the red line.

  • San Jose Sharks: Capturing that sleek ocean vibe perfectly at center ice.

Here’s hoping the graphics team at EA Sports catches wind of these presentation bugs and pushes out a quick hotfix so we can enjoy a truly authentic season on the ice!
